Another role-playing sensation

Deltarune is a free role-playing game (RPG) for Windows. It’s created by Toby Fox, the developer of the award-winning game Undertale. Though the game is set in a different world than the first game, it expands on the series while keeping intact its unique charm. Known for its soundtrack, characters, and unpredictable endings, Deltarune is the first chapter in a yet to be released series. The game isn’t limited to Windows and is available for download on Mac and Android devices as well as Nintendo Switch.

The story behind Deltarune

Owing to one small detail, the video gaming community around the world became fascinated with Toby Fox’s Undertale. The role-playing game had three separate endings that depended on the choices selected by the player. One choice led to genocide, another led to a neutral ending. The final and the actual ending of the game took a pacifist stand.

Furthermore, the game had a thick plot. The character that you chose had to find its way home, after falling into an underground and hidden monster world. Undertale became a huge success, with a fandom that began participating in development. After a while, the fanbase dwindled. It stayed that way until Toby Fox announced the release of Deltarune on Twitter.

Is Deltarune a prequel to Undertale?

While most people assume Deltarune to be the prequel or sequel to Undertale, it is anything but. The game is set in a different world, with another storyline and new characters. Though some old characters do make an appearance, they’re only in supporting roles. Apart from Undertale’s soundtrack and sense of humor, everything else is fresh. Instead of thinking of Deltarune as a prequel to Undertale, players should see it as more of a spin-off.

What is Deltarune?

Modeled after 8-bit games like Mario and Metroid, Deltarune’s layout is a trip down memory lane. It even has throwback music to support the classic design. While the graphics and imagery are old, the references and humor that you’ll come across are quite modern, firmly placing Deltarune in this century. Another important aspect of the game is that it is part of a bigger, yet to be released series.

The plot is similar to that of Undertale, wherein the protagonist falls into an underworld of monsters and has to somehow find a way home. There are four primary characters in the game, Susie, Lancer, Ralsei, and Kris, and the story revolves around them. They’re well-rounded individuals and their dynamics and emotions push the game forward.

Interesting gameplay and storyline

From the beginning, it’s quite clear that Deltarune isn’t a continuation of Undertale, but the first chapter is set in the same universe. Kris, the game’s silent hero, wakes up in his mother’s house. She drops him off to school and everything seems mundane and real. However, the calm doesn’t last.

Kris finds himself dropping into the strange world of the underground from a dark supply closet. It’s a world of puzzles, enemies, and monsters built by Undertale. The game continues with its tradition of kindness and the lack of violence. It has the same hellish battles and non-violent combats. But, there are subtle differences that will become more prominent as other parts get released.

A stark spoiler of the game is that it ends on a nerve-wracking cliffhanger. Players get left with many unanswered questions as well as subtle hints of various possibilities. Until Toby Fox releases the remaining series, players will have to make do with chapter 1 and its ending.

Deltarune has the same characters as Undertale?

One of the best parts about Deltarune is that it is ideal for fans of Undertale while holding the ability to create a new fanbase. A few characters do make an appearance, but they never take the spotlight away from Deltarune’s primary characters. Toby Fox has added the right amount of references and allusions, most of which are only noticeable by hardcore Undertale enthusiasts.

Is Deltarune Chapter 2 out?

No, Deltarue Chapter 2 is still in development and doesn’t have an official release date yet. Fortunately, Toby Fox seems to be working on the game and intends to put together a team to complete the series. At the moment, though, players only have the first three hours of gameplay, the remaining will come later.

Is Deltarune finished?

Deltarune is the first part in a series of games, yet to be developed and released by Toby Fox. He has admitted that the game is a three-hour chapter and that players may have to wait a few years for Deltarune to finish.

Is Deltarune kid-friendly?

A lot of children enjoyed playing Undertale and the same is true for Deltarune. It’s kid-friendly and easy to play. As long as a child can read the dialogues and follow the steps, he or she can easily play the game.

Do I need to play Undertale to play Deltarune?

Since Deltarune isn’t a sequel to Undertale, you don’t necessarily have to play it to understand the other. You can start with Deltarune and enjoy it as it is. The only drawback to it is that you may find it difficult to understand some references.

Are there any alternatives?

Apart from all the 8-bit classics, there are many games you can play instead of Undertale. If you’re looking for similar alternatives, you should check out Unitale, Sans Simulator, and of course Undertale.

Is Deltarune worth playing?

If you’re looking for a fun and interesting game that has a lot to offer, you should download Deltarune. It has a great soundtrack, quirky humor, and nostalgia-provoking graphics. Moreover, the game has several endings, depending on the choices your character makes. The cross-platform game is free and part of a much-loved universe in the gaming community. So, if you haven’t played it already, it’s worth a try!
